Inequality and Support for Restributive Policy: One World of Post-Communism, Two Worlds of Western Capitalism

چکیده
This paper deals with attitudes towards inequality by comparing a number of post-communist and western capitalist societies. The data are from the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) of 1992. As a first step, basic differences in attitudes are described. In comparison East Europeans perceive on average slightly more distributional conflicts, criticize income differences more strongly and show much more support for interventionist principles. As a second step the influence of real income inequalities on these opinions is explored. While each time the correlations are positive for the New Democracies (e.g. support for redistributive policy tends to be higher in countries with a high level of inequality), different patterns occur in the West. Egalitarian policies are less in demand in the Anglo-Saxon countries, despite rather uneven income distribution. Hence there seems to exist a (still) rather similar ethos of equality in the post-communist countries, but different ..ideologies" in the West. Compared to data of 1987, these cross-cultural variations are very stable. INEQUALITY AND REDISTRIBUTION

Global Health in the Anthropocene: Moving Beyond Resilience and Capitalism; Comment on “Health Promotion in an Age of Normative Equity and Rampant Inequality”
There has been much reflection on the need for a new understanding of global health and the urgency of a paradigm shift to address global health issues. (1) Ecological–centered values must become central in any future global health framework. (2) ...

Meanwhile, the income of the richest 20 percent has increased by 15 percent and that of the top 1 percent by more than 100 percent. In Asia, the high concentrations of we...

The world has made a great deal of progress through the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to improve the health and well-being of people around the globe, but there remains a long way to go. Here we provide reflections on Rwanda’s experience in working to meet the health-related targets of the MDGs. This experience has informed our proposal of five guiding principles that may be useful for co...

The world was different when the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion was released 30 years ago. Concerns over the environment and what we now call the ‘social determinants of health’ were prominent in 1986. But the acceleration of ecological crises and economic inequalities since then, in a more complex and multi-polar world, pose dramatically new challenges for those committed to the original ...
